The Oberon 9-Person Family Camping Tent is a 26'x22'x7", waterproof tent that has three 3-person rooms and a spacious living area. Designed with your comfort in mind so don't be surprised with the cozy arrangement of the inner tent!

The Oberon 9 is in the 7-10 people range along with Como, Discovery, Capricorn, Icarus, Zeus, Sarengo, Utah, Atlas+Miga, and Axis & Zulu. It is on the higher end of the scale in terms of capacity, designed to accommodate a maximum of 9 people.

Although it is rated for 9 people, it is actually better for a group or family of 7. Each of the 3 sleeping pods is perfect for 2 people, while the main hub can hold your equipment along with one more person. Another possible arrangement is to use one of the pods as a storage area, leaving more room in the hub for 3 people. Either way, there will be lots of comfortable space for everyone. To get a better grip on these possible set ups, you can see the tent's layout in the image gallery.

The Oberon is one of the new designs released only recently and has a Standard construction. Its assembly pieces are top-notch however they are not as lightweight as the materials used in Premium construction tents. It clocks in at 26 kgs, placing it on the upper half of the scale in terms of weight. If your vehicle will be close to the campsite, a tent of this weight won't be too much to carry. However, if your campsite is more distant, a lighter tent like the Zeus (17 kgs) or Icarus (15.6 kgs) might be more suitable for you.

The Oberon is just above the middle of scale in terms of headroom. It has an inside standing height of 215 cm. This makes it a good choice if you don't have any special height requirements. However, if one of the members of your group is exceptionally tall, the Zeus (250 cm) or the Axis & Zulu (260 cm) will be a better match.

It has one of the smallest packed sizes in this range: the Oberon packs down to 72 x 33 x 29cm. For an even more compact packed size, take a look at the Sarengo and the Icarus.

You don't have to worry when it starts to rain; the Oberon 9 is completely waterproof. Starting with the dense 210T polyester taffeta rain fly which is coated with 3000mm polyurethane film, down to the tightly-stitched (6-7 stitches per inch) and fully-taped seams, you can be assured that no water comes in. Water from the ground won't seep in either because polyethylene groundsheets are sewn into the sleeping areas, while a tub-style, fitted groundsheet covers the living area.

The Oberon 9 will be a comfortable place for you and your family after a long day of hiking. The inner tent is made with lightweight 190T polyester. Plus its fabric doors are built with mesh panels and mesh vents for improved ventilation. This keeps your inner tent cool and keeps condensation to a minimum.

Cleaning up a large tent might sound like a challenge but not with the Oberon 9. The tent's rain fly and sleeping areas are detachable, making clean-up an easy thing to do.

Rest assured that the Oberon 9 will stay standing even in strong wind conditions. It is held up by Ubertech shock-corded poles that are 45% stronger than fiberglass ones. The tent's shape is maintained by the maximum resistance and tension created by the smartly-positioned, large PP webbing straps. Lastly, it is bolted down with massive ABS tent stakes which are lighter but much stronger than conventional steel stakes (Note: The Oberon 9 is sturdy but it is not designed for use in extreme weather i.e. gale force winds and hurricanes).

The Oberon 9's tent sleeves are color-coded so you can say goodbye to guesswork and slip the poles into their rightful sleeves the first time around. Pitching in low-light condition is also made easier by the reflective 3M Scotch-lite thread woven into the guy ropes.

The assembly pieces of the Oberon 9 are high-quality. Getting this tent will prove to be a good investment since you will be using it for many years to come. Nevertheless, it comes with a 12-month warranty which will entitle you to a replacement if anything is faulty with your tent.

Your Questions Answered

From Kim and Kylie:

We purchased the Oberon...Do you have any hints tips on the best way to pitch it? Thanks.

Give yourself some time, plenty of space and patience - setup between 2 people can take 30 mins and over time less as you get to know your tent. Take out all the tent components from the duffle bag and lay them out. Identify all of the parts and follow the instructions carefully - if you do not have a copy of these instructions, just head on to our Help section or the Tent Assembly Manuals under it.

The Oberon is a fly pitch first tent meaning you assemble the poles into the rain fly and set it up first. After that, you assemble the separate sleeping inner tents and then the groundsheet. Use the tent stakes to get the initial layout but bear in mind you might have to adjust the position to ensure that all sides of the tent fabric are stretched tight to ensure a good shape. Use the guy ropes included for stability and to help keep the fabric taut.

These are the general guidelines for setting up a tent but if you have more specific questions, please let us know and we'll be happy to help.

  1. Many pros and a couple cons

    Posted by on

The large space in the center is great. We actually had it rain on our first trip out and this tent worked perfectly. The kids having their own section was also very nice. The pods though can feel a bit small (at least to my wife). Additionally having the center floor separate is great for clean up but allows bugs in (though not into the sleeping pods)which was a bit annoying. Set up is fairly easy once you do it a couple times and the color coded poles are great

  2. Oberon 13 man tent

We have used this tent for several years in a row now. We put the kids in each pod with their own full-sized mattresses in two of the pods, and use the third for all of our gear. My husband and I put our queen-sized mattress and frame in the center part of the tent. We eliminated the bug problem by using a roll of thick plastic and making our own footprint for the tent. I really wish this tent were still available, as many of our friends have fallen in love with it and wish to buy one of their own.

  3. Our Family Size TENT!

    Posted by on

We have also used this tent for many years, last year we did not have an opportunity to camp. So this year we set it up in our yard to check it out and see if everything was still as it was. The tent takes up our whole front yard - in a good way not obtrusive. The tent was perfect and it reminded us of how spacious, easy, and fun this tent was and is for us. The three pods allow us all to have our own space, girls in one, boys in other and us in our own tent. No stepping on anyone while coming in or out of tent. Spacious center. It would be nice it the center connected to the pods so the pods and the internal center floor wasn't exposed to the outside but overall we have never had any issue! This tent has served us well and will serve us well this week as we plan on camping all week! GREAT TENT!!!!
